Linda Pischke, wife, mother and social worker is convinced the justice system is fair until she receives an invitation that forces her to question every middle-class belief she has about crime and criminals. When a retired priest asks Linda to serve at the county jail she is certain it’s a mistake. How could God possibly use a lukewarm Christian in jail ministry? The call brings her to Block 12 a holding unit for women waiting trial. Linda believes she is the teacher and the women are her students, but God has another plan. As the prisoners reveal their deepest personal stories, Linda realizes she has much to learn about faith, courage and what it means to be a friend. A page-turner - both heartbreaking and humorous. The reader will never forget the women of Block 12.
The Women of Block 12 Voices from a Jail Ministry edition by Linda Pischke Religion Spirituality eBooks
"The Women of Block 12" by Linda Pischke is a journey. This book is a journey past your preconceived notions about the drug-addicted women in our society and the imprisoned women that are talked about yet hidden from view. This is a journey past the media hype. This is a journey past being a safe, convenient Christian. This book takes you into the often scandalous lives of female inmates and their trek with Jesus Christ.Pischke does a great job relaying her feelings and insights as she becomes aware of the humanity of the women who attend her Wednesday night ministry. She realizes not all of the women in the county jail are shadows in the dark. Every woman in that county jail was not simply a bad statistic or simply a product of their environment. The women of Block 12 who came to and went from the prison ministry had families, dreams and lives that stretched beyond the concrete walls.
The second half of "The Women of Block 12" was comprised of letters given to Pichke telling the stories of the women in their own words. Some letters are informative. Some are adventurous. Others are downright ugly. They all had a common thread of reflection and passion. They gave names, faces and places to people who were reduced to a series of numbers or marginalized by the industrial prison complex.
The beauty of the stories shared by the inmates was that they are authentic, naked and raw. Some of the things that were shared in terms of what lead them to being in Block 12 and beyond were so tragic they could not have been fabricated. These stories were not heroic nor commendable. There were broken homes, children lost in the foster care system, manipulative family members and going in and out of the prisons like they were department stores.
All-in-all, "The Women of Block 12" was an eye-opener. This book was not only a book about a woman who took the time to help other women in need. This book was also a voice for the voiceless and a potential help for those women who might be on the verge of giving up on God amidst it all.

The Women of Block 12 Voices from a Jail Ministry edition by Linda Pischke Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I have worked with incarcerated and previously incarcerated women, and the stories in this book resonate with those I have personally heard. It is wonderful to see some overcome their addictions and their pasts to become responsible, contributing citizens.
Good insights into life on the inside as viewed by a religious volunteer. I really appreciated the different stories of the women and how they got to this point in their life. Heart breaking stories.
Linda Pischke's book will deinitely open its readers eyes to a new world that not many care to think about. It made me look at criminals and offenders in a whole new light. She leaves you laughing one second and crying the next. Everyone has a story and this one will teach its readers to not judge a book by its cover, as it opens your eyes to the horror, loss, sadness, and unforgettable experiences endured by women across the country. After reading these touching tales of strength, endurance, and forgiveness you will want to know what you can do to make a difference in the lives of others. Linda Pischke and the Women of Block 12 are truley an inspiration to all!
Linda Pischke's book shares insight into the sometimes frail and often times amazingly strong human spirit of the author and several of the ladies she worked, cried and laughed with at the County Jail. She points out her own short comings, and her struggles in accepting God's call to work with ladies who have lived lives with broken families, abuse, fear, and incarceration, which are foreign to her and to most of us who read Linda's book. What is so special, is how Linda and these ladies, by the grace of God, succeed in bringing to light that we all share troubles in one form or another, and that what is most important is that we open our hearts to each other with our faith, compassion, love, forgiveness and hope. That is what God has called us to be, messengers of hope, and after reading "The Women of Block 12", you may find yourself hearing God's call to serve with this Jail Ministry. Pray about it and God will show you the way.
Just excellent, the stories are so real, the writer is just so down to earth, exposing the truth!
i am sure there is so much more horrific stuff going on behind the cell, many which can not
be talked about, the mean bully guards, the over authoritarian staff, putting the inmates down
humiliating them, it is just so sad, there is no one, the inmates can turn to for help...
they are alone like in a world of zombies..and then when they are released, all doors close on them
with NO JOB offers, no place to go to, how can they start over, when they are thrown out to
the streets, with no money, not a place to help. it is just in humane, my heart goes out to all those
women, who have been behind bars...my prayers are w/ them daily.
Hearing these women's stories makes me realize that I didn't have things that bad growing up.
This book is well-written and the author shows a genuine caring for the women she has worked with.
And she admits that her idea of these prisoners was much different going in the first time and now that she knows them.
God has put her in a place where she can show God's love in the face of adversity. God bless you Linda.
I have heard people say that jail is too much like going on vacation for the prisoners. I have known some people who have been in jail and where they were was anything but vacation. This book gives real life stories of what jail is like and insight into the lives of women who end up in jail. People should read this book to see that something needs to be done to help women these days as too many are ending up in prison for long periods of time for minor offenses whereas some other people you would think would be in for long periods of time are only in for a few months. Hopefully reading this will spur on some new ministries to help provide alternatives to crime and jail for women in need.
