THEY edition by Vincent Hobbes Literature Fiction eBooks

Vincent Hobbes knows how to tell a story. I received They via one of my ebook newsletters. I receive so many, but this one stood out to me. Mostly because I thought it was from a movie I saw back in the 90's but the cover and the one word seems to call on me.

The story is about a family, two brothers and their wives who are on a holiday. Sad part is, they're driving through an awful snowstorm. Visibility is bleak and they're out of gas. So the brothers, Mike and Brian decide to walk to a nearby gas station while the sisters-in-law stay tucked away in their orange Blazer. But the brothers run into trouble: them. The the story takes off. Now because it's a short story, it doesn't run for long,, but its good; a page turner. One to share with others if they like horror but can't take too much of it.

Check out Vincent Hobbes' They and he's got other books out there too. I found this one through Amazon, but his work is also available anywhere ebooks are sold, most of them are free! I'm off to the next book!

THEY edition by Vincent Hobbes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

There is one unusual thing about "They," the short story by Vincent Hobbes. We never actually find out who the title characters are. Of course, that's not the only thing we don't find out in this competently written but unremarkable story. In particular, we don't find out why "We" should have spent our time (and in some cases our money) reading this story.

"They" is the story of two couples (two brothers and their wives) on an ill-fated trip in the Colorado Rockies. They get lost during the night in a snowstorm and eventually run out of gas. Seemingly fortunately, when they do, they are close to a gas station, so the two men decide to walk there and get some help. It turns out, however, that it wasn't so fortunate after all as the couples encounter "They," and gruesomely bad things begin to happen rather quickly.

Although "They" is a self-contained 15-page story and not an excerpt from a longer work, it certainly reads like the beginning of a horror novel. As a teaser intro, we might forgive the rather rushed feel of the piece, the lack of character development or real tension and the rather anticlimactic ending. As a self-contained story, however, we realize how much better the piece would be if author Hobbes explored the interplay among four related people who get stuck in the middle of nowhere because of some bad decision making or if the increasing tension of the story had been allowed to develop at greater length. However, in place of everything that would have made "They" a really good story, we get ... some well written graphically violent moments and being allowed to imagine who "They" are.

"They" is competent (gotta love how the title allows you to play with proper grammar), and it's not a story readers are likely to quit in the middle of (unless they are squeamish). But I expect a short story to leave me with something... a clever ending, some insight into human nature, an intriguing problem or issue... something that justified Hobbes writing the story and my reading it. Instead, it just ends. I got the story for free as a promotion, but Hobbes apparently charges for it normally. As a free story, it was marginally worth my time. A reader who pays for it, however, will find that "They" got to his wallet instead of his imagination.
They by Vincent Hobbes elicited no sympathy from me. Anyone dumb enough to to drive in a snowstorm, in the mountains, at night, shouldn't be surprised when they run out of gas and find themselves totally screwed. Typical horror characters lacking common sense.

Stranded in the freezing cold is a nightmare itself, but when something, or several somethings, are hunting in the storm, the terror does increase. I just wish Hobbes would have shown some mercy with his characters, considering the vague description of Them.
They is a quick little story about two couples who get lost in a snow storm while on a trip.

They have used most of their gas and can't turn back so they are forced to push on. The car eventually runs out of gas and the two men decide to bundle up and head off looking for help. They report back that they see lights up ahead and they are off to find gas and warm beverages for the ladies.

Some time passes and one of the men comes back and he is gravely injured. The two women get the car running again and drive toward the lights they were told about. They arrive at a gas station that is overrun by zombies and the other member of their party is being devoured at the store. You can guess what happens to the surviving charaters at that point.

The story is good, the situation is relatable for those of us who don't have roadside assistance or travel outside of our cell phone coverage. This is a great quick story for zombie lovers. Check it out!
