I can not give a full evaluation of "WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES" since I have completed only the first chapter. I doubt if I will finish this teaching aid anytime soon. If you truly wish to understand what the BIBLE is all about this book will cover a multitude of questions, yet there is always more questions that come to mind as long as you approach it with a willingness to understand. You will need to have a copy of the BIBLE handy since this book, after all, is a guide and constantly references different parts of the BIBLE. "WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES" is all about, learning about the BIBLE. if you are looking for a book that is entertaining in a fast paced action adventure sense, then this is not the book for you. The whole objective of this book is to open the BIBLE bare with scientific evaluation, though as R.A. Torrey points out, the more he studied the BIBLE to create "WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES" the stronger his conviction became that there was one Arthur behind the many writers of the BIBLE and that Arthur was God.Product details

What The Bible Teaches edition by RA Torrey Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
It meet all my expectations. and then some I would recommend this book to friends. I think if you don't have anything to read this would be interesting to read.
This is a great book to have in your library. It is an excellent book that explores biblical doctrine, and simply teaches God's truth. This book will build your faith and understanding of God.
The best comprehensive theological work I have read in a long time.... Very inspiring.
Brilliant. Very little commentary, almost entirely Scripture, arranged thoughtfully and systematically by topic. It's what the BIBLE teaches.
This is an excellent book that is best used as almost a devotional or textbook because you need time to absorb what you have read. It covers the basics of the bible and goes beyond that too.
If you are a person whose open mind is seeking answers from the Bible, then this book is for you. It doesn't try to sell a religious point of view or a set of dogma. It simply answers questions ordinary people have. The title of the book pretty much nails down what the book intends to do to give the reader a simple answer from the Bible.
For instance in the course of an average conversation with friends, I have been asked about the end times and Biblical prophecy on the second coming of Jesus Christ. They want to know what the Bible says about that. The book answers that question in a precise and concise manner. The book gives the text from the Bible and it explains how one text relates to another text.
For another, the book answers threshold questions Does the Bible teach that Jesus Christ is God? The book will not give the reader theological jargon. The book will simply point to the specific Scripture passage that answers the question. No sermons, no opinions and no grandstanding. Read the answer, check in your own Bible for accuracy and think about it. Whether you mentally assent to the answer and base your personal belief in it is your choice to make.
This book is for those people who don't want religion so much as they want their questions answered by the Bible. So if you want to know what the Bible says and what the Bible teaches about a certain topic, then this is the book you want to read.
Reuben Archer Torrey was an American theologian and evangelist in the late 19th and early 20th century. Influenced by Charles Grandison Finney, Torrey graduated from Yale University and Yale Divinity school, was ordained a Congregationalist minister, and then did further theological studies in Europe at Leipzig University and Erlangen University. Later, he worked with Dwight L. Moody, and then held revival meetings of his own throughout the world. Torrey published many books and was an editor of the twelve volume set The Fundamentals, which gave its name to the Fundamentalist Movement of the early 1900s.
Despite attending European universities, R. A. Torrey was a very conservative Evangelical Christian who believed in the Fundamentals of the Faith. What The Bible Teaches is an excellent book for teaching new Christians basic Bible doctrines, and makes a good refresher for mature Christians. As much as I like Finney's Systematic Theology (which may be controversial but is certainly not "dry"), I would recommend What the Bible Teaches to be studied first because it gives basic Bible doctrines by topic. Torrey does not give a Calvinist, Wesleyan Arminian, or New School theological emphasis to the doctrines. Instead, Torrey gives the basic doctrines of the Bible from a historic Trinitarian perspective. My favorite Evangelical writers from the 1800s are Finney, Torrey, and Charles Haddon Spurgeon (the latter being a Calvinist). Spurgeon recommended to his congregation the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith and composed a Calvinistic Baptist Catechism to teach the basics of the faith. Again, What the Bible Teaches would either be read first or studied in conjuction with those two documents, if one decides to use What The Bible Teaches for basic Bible studies.
Although the leadership church fellowship I attended in the late 1980s refused to recommend a Systematic Theology or Dogmatics Compendium to the congregation, if one pushed them, they would recommend What the Bible Teaches. Thus, Torrey's book was the first book on Bible doctrine I read before going through Finney's Systematic Theology, then Gordon C. Olsen's books (though I could never accept his open view of God), Calvin's Institutes, and Augustus Strong's Systematic Theology. So, I may be biased toward What the Bible Teaches, even these days. However, I believe the book can be useful for any Evangelical Christian.
