Arriving in a hail of musket fire, the Doctor unexpectedly finds himself in the highlands of Scotland, where the ruthless Black Donald and his band of rebels are fighting the Redcoats. But the highland warriors no longer fight for the Jacobite cause and the English officers answer only to the mysterious Overlord.

This story marks the beginning of the Sixth Doctor and Jamie trilogy as the Doctor finds himself in 1780s Century Scotland where the Red Coats are oppressing the Scots and this time under the mysterious Red Caps. The Scot opposition is led by Black Donald (aka an older Jamie McCrimmon.)The story flows very well and is a strong start to the trilogy as the main issue resolved while leaving many questions to be answered later such as the reason for all the anachronistic items and people around including Rob Roy and Telephones.
Frazier Hines and Colin Baker enjoy an easy chemistry that make listening to them a delight while Georgia Moffet turns in a very good performance as the very proper but bold Alice. The villain is a bit of a stock and generic monster as far as Big Finish goes and Richard Earl's French accent is mediocre which hinders his performance a tad. Still, this is a solid kick off to this trilogy.

City of Spires Doctor Who Simon Bovey 9781844354573 Books Reviews
City of Spires was an episode that I was looking forward to. The return of Jamie McCrimmon as a companion, the appearance of Georgia Moffett in the series. Both boded well for both this story and the future CD that would come with it. Alas not all things meet expectations.
It wasn't a question of the acting. As usual Colin Baker's 6th doctor was a pleasure to listen to, Frazier Hines plays Jamie as if he never missed a beat and Georgia Moffett is spectacular in her role as Alice.
The first CD find the doctor in the late 1700's in Scotland meeting a Jamie McCrimmon who still doesn't remember him. The first CD is simply wonderful. The story draws you in, you care about the characters and you can't wait to see what happens net.
Unfortunately for us, the first CD ends, and after a brief good start the 2nd CD turns into a mess of gobbledygook. The actors do their best to keep the story flowing but the plot gets silly and the story gets weaker and weaker till by the time you are half way through part four you are simply begging for it to end.
That's what really hurt this episode the 1st CD was so good and the second so much worse that the letdown is spectacular.
Lets hope the next two Jamie episodes and the companion chronicle adventure that goes with it don't have the same issue
