Overall, this is a very good anthology, and a recommended dystopia sampler for any bookshelf. Some of the stories greatly outshine the others in quality and haunting resonance, and of course some of them do not suit my personal taste (but may yours). All of that is to be expected in any anthology of this size, with such a generationally diverse cast of writers. At more than halfway through, the high points have far outweighed the low.

"O Happy Day!" by Geoff Ryman is perhaps too vile of a cautionary tale for me, while "Red Card" by S.L. Gilbow, "Ten with a Flag" by Joseph Paul Haines, "The Funeral" by Kate Wilhelm, and "Amaryllis" by Carrie Vaughn are all wonderful stories by writers that I have never read before. To that point, the recommended further reading lists at the end are an excellent final touch.

I now wish that I had a copy for my bookshelf, because the Kindle edition has a two big problems.:

1. It was not made clear on the Amazon page for the Kindle edition that four stories (by J.G. Ballard, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, and Kurt Vonnegut) were omitted from the digital version. The author or publisher inserted a clever dig at the rights holders of these stories on the digital copyright page, which I chuckled at and do appreciate, but had I known these stories were omitted, I would have purchased a paperback copy instead.

2. There is no table of contents, which means that you cannot easily skip stories or read them out of order. A table of contents with links to the starting page of each story is a very important element in electronic versions of long anthologies like this! Want to re-read that one story that really surprised you? You'd better remember the title or the name of the author so you can run a search for it.

4 stars for the collection/3 for the kindle edition.

Brave New Worlds John Joseph Adams 9781597802215 Books Reviews

I absolutesly LOVE this anthology! If you like Sci-Fi short stories about future utopias (or dystopis) then you are sure to love this book! Although there are a couple of "crappy" stories, overall the stories are wonderful and very well done! My only complaint is that you can only get this as an ebook and not as a real hardcover or softcover book!
This is a very well curated collection of dystopian fiction. The stories make you think, make you ponder, sometimes fearful and other times hopeful. There are a number of authors I was unfamiliar with along with bigger names. I like the length variation in the stories (3 pages up to novella length), it helps keep them from flowing together.

Overall I highly recommend this collection for any fans of dystopian or speculative fiction. It's well worth every penny.
It's hard to give just one review to a book full of short stories, as each story is its own beast. The compilation, however, is very well put together. For anyone who's given some critical thought to what may happen if we go down this road or that, regardless of its dystopian or utopian nuances, the editor of this book has addressed every mood and allowed the stories to shine through on their own merit.

I can't think of a better collection. Highly recommend.
I couldn't believe I hadn't read any of these stories before except for The Lottery! So many different and unbelievable stories! The stories in this book had me looking and thinking about things I had never considered and I always thought of myself as well read. These stories really made me think about how things are and how they could be. Very enlightening in frightening ways. Made me grateful for the life that I have and a little scared of how easy it would be for life to be horrific! I enjoyed everyone of these stories and I think they are a must read for anyone who likes to have their mind challenged.
Some great stories and a pretty good mix of different authors and writing styles. Some are really deep and leave you thinking where others are just your basic dystopian fiction, entertaining but no deep messages about humanity and human nature.
The one thing I found annoying was how much time the author spent telling you about each author and what awards they won and were nominated for. Some were long and boring before ending with a cool little comment about the up coming story itself.
I felt the comments telling me what to expect were well written and added to the book as a whole, but most of the rest stating which awards and how many each author achieved over their lifetime would have been better put in a separate section in the back of the book providing the info for those interested while not boring those of us just looking to read a good story.
Bottom line it is a great collection of dystopian fiction and well worth getting.
As with other collection, I will not review each story, but I will just give a general review of all the good ones. There are some great stories in here by power house authors, and not surprisingly, the main allure of the book is with these few authors, not really the rest of the pack. Some of the unknown authors put forth a good effort to make a neat dystopian short, but more often times than not, these stories either completely fall flat, or just end up hum drum, done to death plots that you have read before. However, for the 8-10 great stories in this collection, I couldn't in good conscious give it less than 4 stars. For readers of dystopian fiction, you will find stories in here you like for certain, and probably some stories you don't like for certain. I doubt many people would love or hate every story in the collection, but who knows. Chances are if you are picking up a collection of dystopian short stories, you have probably already read 1984, A Brave New World, A Handmaid's Tale, or something similar, so the plot-lines of these stories won't be a huge shock. But, you will also be allowed to read some more modern dystopian shorts where its not solely the "evil government" run amok, but perhaps corporations, or religion, or even the art world that has taken over. All-in-all, I really enjoyed reading this collection, even if I did skim a few and flat out bypass a few. I am still glad I read it, and I still give it a firm 4 stars.
